To plant safflower, you should choose sandy loam and light clay soil with high and dry terrain, deep soil layer, medium fertility, easy irrigation and drainage, and avoid continuous cropping. For planting in the south, corn, cotton, sorghum, rice, etc. are generally selected as the first crop, and the land is prepared after the first crop is harvested. For planting in northern areas, the first crops are usually peanuts, soybeans, wheat, etc., and the land is prepared before sowing in spring.
The safflower land needs to be plowed deeply for more than 25 centimeters, and 2000 to 2500 kilograms of compost or ring fertilizer should be applied every 667 meters as base fertilizer. When making a border, it depends on the topography, soil quality and local rainfall conditions. On the premise of ensuring that there is no accumulation of water, it is determined whether to make a high border, a flat border or no border. Before sowing, prepare the soil so that the surface is flat and the topsoil is loose and finely divided. In northern areas, safflowers are generally sown in spring, and can be sown after the thaw in late March, and no later than early April; in southern areas, safflowers can be sown in autumn, and sown in early October, neither too early nor too late. Too early bolting the next year will affect yield, and too late emergence will make it difficult to survive the winter. Safflower can be sown in rows or holes. The spacing between rows is 30-50 cm, and the depth of the trench is 4-5 cm. 4 to 5 cm, 5 to 10 seeds per hole, cover with soil and compact after sowing. The amount of seed used for drill sowing and hole sowing is 3 to 5 kilograms per 667 meters.
