North American pike include S. vitreum, which is found in cool lakes and rivers, and S. canadense, which is found in lakes and muddy rivers, both of which are black in color and native to eastern North America. S. canadense is a small fish, usually less than 30 centimeters long and weighing less than 1 kilogram; S. canadense rarely weighs more than 4.5 kilograms, but can reach a maximum length of 90 centimeters and a maximum weight of 11 kilograms.
