[Source] The fruit of Foeniculum vulgare Mill. of the Umbelliferae family of plants, Umbelliferae.
[Botanical form] Perennial herb, 0.6~2m high, the whole plant is pruinose, with strong fragrance. Stem erect, branched above, angular. Leaves alternate, 2-4-pinnately lobed, ultimate segments filiform, 0.4-4cm long, about 0.5mm wide; lower leaves long-petiolate, basal sheaths clasping the stem, upper leaf stalks partly or wholly sheathing. Compound umbels terminal, ebracteate and involucreless; umbels 8-30, unequal; pedicels 5-30; flowers small, golden yellow. Double pendant fruit rectangular, fruit ribs sharp, with peculiar aroma. Fl. June-July, fr. Oct. Cultivated everywhere.
Mainly in Shanxi, Nei Mongol, Gansu, and Liaoning.

[Characteristics] The double suspended fruit is fine ellipsoid, some slightly curved, 4-8mm long, 1.5-2.5mm in diameter, with a yellowish green or light yellow surface, slightly pointed at both ends, with yellowish brown protruding stigmatic base at the tip, and some with a fine fruiting peduncle at the base. The schizocarp is long elliptic, with 5 longitudinal ribs on the abaxial surface, and the joint surface is flat and wide. The cross-section is slightly pentagonal, with the dorsal four sides about equal in length. It has a peculiar aroma and a slightly sweet, pungent flavor.

[Sexual flavor] Warm, pungent, bitter.
[Functions and Indications] Promoting blood circulation, promoting qi, relieving pain. It is used in treating pain in chest and abdomen, dysmenorrhea, postpartum stagnation, swelling and pain. The dosage is 3-9g.
