Roots of Lepidoptera (Rutaceae). It can be harvested throughout the year.

6 Original form

Evergreen shrub or tree, up to 12 meters high. Stem and branches with reddish-brown prickles. Leaves alternate; simple pinnately compound, with 7-23 leaflets: total axis 7-12 cm long, with few spines or unarmed; leaflets rhomboid-obovate or obliquely moment-orbicular, 2-5 cm long, 1-2 cm wide, terminal leaflet moment-orbicular, up to 7 cm long, apex obtuse, base narrowed into a short stipe, margins slightly wavy all round; or shallowly crenate inconspicuously above the middle. Panicles terminal, sparsely 3-dichotomous, or 2-3 times umbel-like branched, ca. as long as the leaves; peduncle 5-9 cm; flowers unisexual, sepals 5, ovate; petals 5, white, ca. 2 mm; stamens of male flowers 5, staminodes short; stamens of female flowers reduced to scales, carpels 2, stigmas capitate. Follicles purplish red, with coarse glandular dots. Seeds black and shiny. Flowering period June to August. Fruiting September to October.

7 Habitat

Born in the wasteland, mountain slopes, stream valleys in the bushes or sparse forests. Distributed in the south of China.

8 Chemical constituents

The bark contains geranylgeranyl glucoside, hesperidin, leucoside, but also contains sterols, phenolic components, organic acids. The root bark contains leranine, hesperidin, geraniol glucoside, leranin.

9 Taste and odor

The Materia Medica: "Pungent, warm."

10 Functions and Indications

Dispelling wind, resolving dampness, subduing swellings, and clearing channels. It is used to treat sore throat, yellow swelling, malaria, rheumatism, bone pain, bruises and contusions.

Internal: decoction, 1 to 2 taels; or soaked in wine to drink. External use: soaked in wine and rubbed on the affected area.
