He was robbed because he was driving a cart, so he took the risk and dominated western Liaoning. When Tang Yulin dominated western Liaoning, he saved Zhang Zuolin's life. Zhang and Tang became life-and-death friends. Later, Zhang Zuolin invited Tang Yulin to join him and jointly set up an insurance team. He died of illness in Tianjin in February 1949 at the age of 78.

Zhang Zuolin (March 19, 1875 - June 4, 1928, courtesy name Yuting) was born in Xixiaowatun, Majiafang Village, Jiazhangsi Township, Haicheng County (now Panjin City, Liaoning Province) , the Grand Marshal of the Army and Navy of the Republic of China, the leader of the Feng Faction, and the father of the patriotic general Zhang Xueliang. He participated in the Sino-Japanese Sino-Japanese Sino-Japanese War. After being recruited by the Qing government, he assisted the Qing government in wiping out Du Lisan and other bandit forces. He successively served as the governor of Fengtian and the patrol envoy of the three eastern provinces. He was known as the "King of the Northeast" and became the leader of the Beiyang Army. After the victory of the Second Zhili-Fengtian War, Zhang Zuolin entered Beijing and served as Marshal of the Army and Navy, exercising governance on behalf of the Republic of China. He repeatedly resisted the Japanese attempts to win over him and refused to sign a traitorous treaty.
On June 4, 1928, he was seriously injured by Japanese explosives (Huanggutun Incident) and died on the same day.
