The body is silvery white, and there is a deep gap between the hard spines and soft strips of the dorsal fin. There is a large black spot on the spine of the dorsal fin. There are oblique black stripes on the upper and lower lobes of the caudal fin. There are three arc-shaped black longitudinal bands on the side of the body. The lowest one starts from the head, passes through the center of the caudal peduncle, and reaches the center of the trailing edge of the caudal fin. The dorsal fin has 12 hard spines and 10 soft rays; the anal fin has 3 hard spines and 9 to 10 soft rays. The body length can reach 36 cm.

It is a bottom-dwelling fish in the sand and mud of inland rivers and estuaries. They like to live in groups in shallower waters to depths of more than 20 meters, and even invade river mouths. They are euryhaline and can be domesticated for freshwater culture and feed on crustaceans and small fish.
