One- or two-year-old erect herb, 20-40 cm tall, the plant is stout, glabrous or sparsely hairy. Stem single or branched, surface with longitudinal grooves. Leaves alternate, basal and lower stem leaves long-petiolate, leaf shape variable, usually lyrate-pinnatifid, 4-10 cm long, 1.5-2.5 cm wide, apical lobes large, ovate-lanceolate, margins irregularly dentate, lateral lobes 1-5 pairs; upper stem leaf blades broadly lanceolate or spatulate, margins remotely dentate, shortly petiolate or auricular-embracing basally. Racemes terminal or lateral, flowers small, numerous, finely pedicellate; sepals 4, ovate-oblong, 3-4 mm; petals 4, yellow, spatulate, base attenuate into a short claw, subequal to sepals; stamens 6, 2 slightly shorter. Long-horned fruit linear-terete, short and thick, 1-2 cm long, 1-1.5 mm wide, erect or slightly recurved, petals elevated at maturity; fruiting pedicels slender, 3-5 mm long, obliquely ascending or nearly horizontally spreading. Seeds in 2 rows per locule, numerous, minute, ovoid and flattened, one end retuse, surface brown, finely reticulate; cotyledon margin leaning on radicle. Fl. April-June, fr. June-Aug.

The whole herb is used as medicine, internally it has the effects of detoxifying the stomach, relieving cough and phlegm, calming asthma, clearing heat and detoxification, dispersing heat and reducing swelling; externally it is used to treat carbuncle, swelling and sores as well as scalded and burned wounds.
