Chardonnay is a cross between Pinot Noir and Gouais Blanc, but it is not as delicate as Pinot, and by virtue of its great adaptability, Chardonnay is scattered in vineyards around the world.
Chardonnay is an important grape variety for making Champagne. The world's most famous sparkling wine, Champagne, is made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.
Main planting areas:
France (Burgundy, Champagne), California in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Chile, Argentina, etc., covering almost all wine-producing countries.
Grape characteristics: small clusters, small grains, with fruity and vanilla aromas. Very similar to Pinot Blanc, it is susceptible to noble rot (gray mold).
Chardonnay aroma:
Chardonnay aroma is not very strong, light odor, suitable for the expression of oak and from the yeast aroma. In some areas, it can produce subtle wines, sometimes described as "metallic" or "mineral".
How should Chardonnay be served?
Young (unoaked) Chardonnay wines are best paired with lighter foods, such as savory crab, shrimp, steamed fish and pasta.
Oaked mature Chardonnay wines are often paired with more delicate foods. These foods include grilled lobster and scallops.
Chardonnay flavors: green apple, pineapple, popcorn, vanilla, butter, mineral.
Pairing with meals:
1. Unoaked young Chardonnay wines from cooler regions are best paired with lighter flavors, such as raw crab, shrimp, steamed or grilled fish, and chicken.
2. Fruity, non-oaky or slightly oaky Chardonnay wines, fish tarts, pasta with creamy sauces. Salads made from chicken, ham or cheese with peach, mango or macadamia nuts are also good choices.
3. Full-bodied and oak-aged Chardonnay wines, heavier-flavored turbot, grilled veal chops, red peppers, corn and winter squash.
4. Mature Chardonnay wines that have been oak-aged, grilled lobster, grilled scallops, grilled chicken, wild mushrooms, white truffles.
Chardonnay main producing areas:
1 France | Burgundy Burgundy, Cordor is located in the center of Burgundy, mild climate. The southern part of Cordor (Beaune district) is the main area for making Chardonnay wines. It is mainly named after villages. Among them, Meursault Meursault and Pirigny-Montrachet Puligny-Montrachet. Chardonnay produced in Montrachet vineyards is recognized as the circle of the world's best dry white wine.
2. Australia, Australia's entire wine region is generally planted Chardonnay, and produces a variety of styles of Chardonnay wines. High-quality production areas include Victoria, some cooler areas (such as Yarra Valley), Adelaide Hills in South Australia, and Margaret River in Western Australia.
3. The United States, Chardonnay grapes are widely planted in the high quality viticulture in California. Because the Pacific Ocean blowing sea breeze and morning dew leads to a cool climate. This slows down the ripening of the grapes, and the long ripening period gives them a rich and complex aroma.
