Civet cats are second-class protected animals in China and have been selected as CITES Appendix III. Those who illegally raise and protect animals are convicted of the crime of illegally hunting and killing precious and endangered wild animals, and those who illegally purchase, transport and sell precious and endangered wild animals and their products under special state protection are to be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of not more than five years or criminal detention and also fined.
