Antelope is a generic term for a group of animals in the family Bovidae of the order Artiodactyla. There are 86 total **** species of antelopes, which belong to 11 families and 32 genera. For taxonomy, antelopes are characterized by long, hollow and sturdy horns, and are ruminants distinguished from the class of cattle and sheep.
Range
Broadly, the class of antelope is considered to be primarily found in Africa, with lesser antelope found in Africa and Asia. The Arabian Peninsula is the habitat of the Arabian oryx and the fawn gazelle. India is the habitat of the Indian oryx, Indian gazelle, and Indian impala. Russia and Southeast Asia are home to the four-horned antelope, the Tibetan antelope and the hartebeest.
In a narrower sense, the distribution of antelope is due to man-made causes, with many species of antelope imported from around the world, especially from the United States, for hunting. Some breeds of antelope have succeeded in escaping and breeding antelope populations by utilizing their amazing bouncing and dodging abilities.
