Gansu, abbreviated as Gan or Long, is located in the upper reaches of the Yellow River, and its capital is Lanzhou. Gansu is the first character of Ganzhou (present-day Zhangye) and Suzhou (present-day Jiuquan), and was shortened to Gan because of the establishment of the Gansu Military Department during the Western Xia Dynasty and Gansu Province during the Yuan Dynasty; and also shortened to Long because most of the province is west of the Longshan Mountains (Liupanshan Mountains), where the Longyudao (Right-of-Way) Road was set up during the Tang Dynasty.
