Muscovy cats love to eat the ripe red coffee berries from coffee trees, so undigested coffee seeds are often left in their feces. Farmers pick these seeds out of the feces, remove the silver-gray film, wash them with water, dry them in the sun, and then stir-fry them to make cat poop coffee beans. Because the musk cats are specialized in picking ripe coffee fruits to eat, the coffee beans are of high quality, and the fermentation of the coffee beans mixed with saliva or gastric juices in the musk cats' bodies gives them a unique flavor.
Because it is not easy to come by, it is said that the annual production of only 800 kilograms, so the price is high.
A 50-gram bag of Rooibos coffee beans costs about HK$5,400. A cup of Rooibos coffee costs about HK$374 to HK$416, based on 3.5 to 4 grams of beans in a cup.
A 100-gram pack of "Rooibos-t10," a blend of 12 percent Rooibos and Arabica beans, also costs HK$1,250.
A five-star hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong, has also introduced this cat poop coffee in its coffee room, which sells for $168 for a 4-ounce cup. Rooibos coffee bean roasting process:
1. Musk cats love to eat the ripe red coffee fruits on the coffee tree;
2. Pick out the undigested coffee seeds from the cat's feces;
3. Wash with water and put it in the sun after removing the silver-gray film of the coffee seed;
4. Stir-fry it to make the Rooibos coffee beans.
