In the Song Dynasty, there was a Zhang family store in Huangsangdian. It had a large entrance hall and many guest rooms. The business was prosperous and it was famous far and wide.

Later, the name Huangsangdian was gradually replaced by Zhangjiadian.

In the Yuan Dynasty, it was called Zhangdian.

In June 1946, when Zhangdian was liberated for the first time, Zhangdian District was established and was affiliated with Zibo Special Economic Zone.

In March 1947, Zhangdian was liberated for the second time and Zhangdian City was established, under the jurisdiction of Bohai Administrative Office.

In March 1948, Zhangdian was liberated for the third time and Zhangdian City was rebuilt.

In May 1950, Zhangdian City was abolished and merged into Huantai County.

In November of the same year, Zhangzhou City was established, and Zhangdian was classified as the second district of Zhangzhou City.

In 1955, Zibo District was changed to Zibo City, Zhangzhou City was abolished, and Zhangdian District was established.

On January 24, 1992, Sibaoshan Township was abolished and Sibaoshan Town was established; Shiqiao Township was abolished and Shiqiao Town was established.

On December 12, 1992, Fujia Town was abolished and Fujia Town was established.

On December 29, 1994, Fangzhen Township was abolished and Fangzhen Town was established.
