Shantang Street (Qili Shantang Street)
Qi Lishan Pond was created by Bai Juyi, the great poet of the Tang Dynasty, who recruited workers to dig river embankments when he was the governor of Suzhou. It has a history of more than a thousand years. It was one of the most developed commercial and cultural neighborhoods in China during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and was known as "The first ancient street in China", "the epitome of old Suzhou and the window of Wu culture".
