Wanzhou, which is located between the main city of Chongqing and Yichang, is a distribution center for materials in eastern Sichuan, eastern Chongqing, western Hubei, southern Shaanxi, western Hunan and northeastern Guizhou in history. It has the reputation of "the city of thousands of merchants" since ancient times, and it was also called "Chengdu-Chongqing" with Chongqing and Chengdu during the Anti-Japanese War.

Since then, due to the adjustment of Chongqing's administrative system, administrative adjustments have been made to Wan, Fu and Qian, with Wanzhou being the longest and most complicated.
Wanzhou has a long history, and is named as "Wan Chuan Bihui" and "Wanshang Biji". There were traces of human activities in the Paleolithic Age, and a number of polished stone tools were unearthed at the Zhazimen site in Dazhou Town. There are many sites in the Neolithic age, such as Fuxikou, Maliutuo, Mixigou, Suheping, Dadizui, Huangbaixi and Juyutuo.

In the Southern and Northern Dynasties, the Western Wei Dynasty abolished Emperor Yuan Qin for two years (553), changed Nanpu to Yuquan County, and moved to Jiangbei (formerly the Ring Road); In the Northern Zhou Dynasty, Yuquan County was first changed to an xiang, and then to Wanchuan County, where it was ruled by Nanzhou and Wan Chuan County.
In the Sui Dynasty, in 598, Wan Chuan County was abolished and Wanchuan County was changed to Nanpu County, which was ruled together with Nanzhou. In the third year of Emperor Yangdi's great cause (617), Nanzhou and Nanpu County of the province belonged to Badong County.
In the Tang Dynasty, in the second year of Wude (619), Nanpu County was established, leading Liangshan, Nanpu and Wuning counties; Wude changed Nanpu County to Puzhou in eight years; In the eighth year of Zhenguan (634), Puzhou was changed to Wanzhou; In the first year of Tianbao (742), Wanzhou was changed to Nanpu County; In the first year of Ganyuan (758), it was renamed Wanzhou and still led Nanpu, Wuning and Liangshan counties.
during the five dynasties and ten kingdoms period, the territory of Wanzhou was occupied by the former Shu, the later Tang and the later Shu, and the administrative establishment still followed the Tang system, leading to Nanpu, Wuning and Liangshan counties.

Due to the convenience of the golden waterway of the Yangtze River, merchants from home and abroad poured in, and Wanzhou became the third largest city in Sichuan, known as "Chengdu, Chongqing and Wan". At the same time, it also became an important material distribution center in eastern Sichuan, western Hubei, southern Shaanxi, eastern Guizhou and western Hunan.
in July of the 14th year of the Republic of China (1925), the Duan Qirui government announced the official opening of Wanxian port. Since then, Wanxian has become the second trading port for direct customs declaration and export in Sichuan province.

in the 24th year of the Republic of China (1935), Wanxian area was established.
since the founding of the People's Republic of China, Wanxian Prefecture has successively been under the leadership of the East Sichuan Administrative Region and Sichuan Province.
in February, 1992, Wanxian area was abolished in Sichuan province. Wanxian City is established at the prefecture level, which governs Longbao District, Tiancheng District, Wuqiao District, Kaixian County, liangping county, Zhongxian County, Yunyang County, fengjie county County, Wushan County, Wuxi County and Chengkou County.
in September, 1996, the central government approved Chongqing, a city under separate state planning in Sichuan province, to take charge of Wanxian city.
in p>1997, Chongqing became a municipality directly under the central government. Chongqing withdrew from Wanxian City and set up Wanxian Immigration Development Zone and Wanxian District.
On May 22nd, 1998, the State Council (Guo Han [1998] No.37) approved the renaming of Wanxian District as Wanzhou District, and Wanxian Immigrant Development Zone as Wanzhou Immigrant Development Zone. (Wanzhou District still governs Longbao Management Committee, Wuqiao Management Committee and Tiancheng Management Committee)
On June 25th, 2111, the State Council (Guo Han [2111] No.88) approved the cancellation of Wanzhou Immigrant Development Zone, and Zhongxian, Kaixian, Yunyang, fengjie county, Wushan and Wuxi counties, which were previously managed by Wanzhou Immigrant Development Zone, were directly under the jurisdiction of Chongqing Municipality. At the same time, Longbao Management Committee, Wuqiao Management Committee and Tiancheng Management Committee were renamed as Longbao Immigrant Development Zone, Wuqiao Immigrant Development Zone and Tiancheng Immigrant Development Zone, which are still under the jurisdiction of Wanzhou District, with 32 towns, 45 townships, 14 streets and 1277 neighborhood committees and village committees.
in April p>2115, Chongqing municipal party Committee and municipal government decided to cancel three immigrant development zones, namely Longbao, Tiancheng and Wuqiao, and Wanzhou district directly managed towns and streets, governing 13 townships, 28 towns and 11 streets, with a total population of 1.68 million and a population of 531,111 in the main urban area, covering an area of 3,457 square kilometers. On June 24th, 2115, the State Council (Guo Han [2115] No.55) approved the relocation of Wanzhou District People's Government in Chongqing from Taibaiyan Street to Chenjiaba Street.
