Travel to Suzhou during the Dragon Boat Festival. The editor recommends three-day tourist attractions, attractions in the Republic of China, classic routes in ancient cities, and attractions among Internet celebrities. There are many attractions to visit in Suzhou. You can choose your favorite past check-in. See below for details.
Day 1: Recommended tours of Suzhou’s Republic of China-style architecture
Why are there so many “Republic of China” buildings in Suzhou?
At the beginning of the last century, Suzhou, as a trading port, was influenced by foreign culture. After the Opium War, a large number of Western architectural styles appeared. Against this background, in Suzhou, in addition to many Republic of China buildings, some streets have even become "Republic of China Streets", such as "Wu Sanshi Road".
Wu San Road was named in commemoration of the "May 30 Massacre". At the northern end of Wu San Road near Ganjiang Road, there are the familiar Tong Deli and Li Tong Yi.
Tongde Li, Li
Tongdeli and Li Tongyi next door, two parallel alleys built in the 1930s, are typical Shikumen buildings. Some houses have red brick exterior walls, and some have clear water exterior walls. The layout is mostly like the traditional three-heyuan courtyard in Jiangnan, with a courtyard in front of the building.
As the filming location for the Su family’s old house in the hit TV series "Everything Is Fine", Tongderry has become a popular check-in place in recent years. The historical buildings, narrow alleys, and patios of old houses here make you feel the breath of life instantly.
Wu San Road
At the southern end of Wu San Road, there are some sealed Shikumen. The reliefs above tell the history of the May 30th Massacre. The portraits vividly reproduce the patriotic feats of Suzhou people.
The Republic of China building behind the relief Shikumen is Xinfuli, a Shikumen residential complex with sea-style alleys.
Li Xinfu
The reason why it is named Xinfuli is because in the 22nd year of the Republic of China (1933), Xinfuli Bank purchased this property that originally belonged to the Third District of Jiangsu Coast Guard , and then build. There are only five existing two-story buildings.
There are many Republic of China buildings in Suzhou similar to Tongdeli and Xinfuli. These places are not only a window into the lifestyle of some people at that time, but also a good place for modern people to experience the "Republic of China style".
Zhilenli
Ren Li's Republic of China building is located in Changmen Neixiachi in the northwest corner of Suzhou ancient city, east of Changmen Hotel, with a total length of more than 160 meters from east to west. It was built by a businessman named Que in the 1920s. The buildings here were originally built for living.
In 2009, Li Zhiren was selected as the chief editor of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage ("Important New Discoveries of the Third National Cultural Relics Census in 2008"). In July of the same year, it was listed as the sixth batch of Suzhou cultural relics protection units by the municipal government. In December 2011, Li Zhiren's Republic of China architecture was listed as the seventh batch of cultural relics protection units in Jiangsu Province by the provincial government.
The building faces south and has six groups of bungalows, six groups of buildings and two garden houses. He is the representative of a large real estate leasing construction group in the Republic of China. The whole Li Zhiren is grand in scale, connected by arcades and integrated into one. The Zhili architectural complex has traces of Western architecture as well as traditional wooden structures. There are both high-end buildings and ordinary bungalows with rich types and distinctive characteristics of the times, which are very rare.
These Republic of China buildings of different styles and scales are arranged in three rows, forming the Li Zhiren Building Complex of the Republic of China. It is a combination of Chinese and Western architectural forms during the Republic of China. It is a typical representative work of the development of Soviet-style courtyards during this period. Has outstanding historical value.
Changmen North Pier
Across the river from Shantang Street, there is Changmen North Pier, a charming street that carries the history of the Republic of China. As the hub of land and water transportation in Suzhou, the former Changmen North Pier was connected in all directions and bustling with people. From the early 20th century to the 1940s, North Pier was mainly home to the middle class such as business owners and doctors. It was quite important at the time, but then it declined.
Today, Changmen North Pier has been transformed into a street with a style of the Republic of China, integrated with Xi Zhong City and across the river from Shantang Street. The 700-meter-long North Pier Republic of China Style Street consists of two renovated buildings and more than a dozen imitation buildings. Combination
The two famous foreign buildings at the North Pier are named after the actual years of construction. They are now called "1929" and "1931" respectively. They can be regarded as the most representative buildings during the Republic of China. They have both traditional Chinese courtyard houses and traditional wooden structures, and are influenced by foreign architectural styles from the early 20th century. They condense the development process of Suzhou's modern architecture and have been included in the Suzhou style architectural protection series.
From these two buildings, we can get a glimpse of the "Chinese and Western" architectural style during the Republic of China, as well as the wealth and fashion of the owners at that time. At present, Nagato North Pier has become a unique commercial district integrating the historical landscape of the city wall and the waterfront landscape of the moat, attracting many citizens and tourists to come and check in.
Jinguli
The original Wuxian Embroidery Factory is located in the northern section of the Pingjiang Road Historic District in Suzhou, on the bank of the Jingu River near Pingjiang. It is close to the Humble Administrator's Garden, Suzhou Museum, Lion Grove, Pingjiang Road and other tourist attractions. The unique geographical location makes it a check-in place for many citizens to visit Pingjiang Road.
With art museums, art hotels, and Tang Hui performances as its core, Jinguli develops a variety of tourism products such as art exhibitions, humanistic hotel accommodation, folk art performances, Wu cultural leisure experiences, and urban humanistic tourism IP image development. Activity.
Jinguli has an overall style with the characteristics of the Republic of China and Soviet elements, beautifying the northern section of Pingjiang Road and enhancing its cultural connotation.
Classical and modern are both in line with the humanistic temperament of the ancient city of Suzhou, and are very suitable for taking photos and checking in~
East Town
At the intersection of Zhujiang Road and Huayuan Road, Mudu Town, Wuzhong District, Suzhou, There is Dongmen Town, a characteristic neighborhood that can instantly take you back to the Republic of China decades ago. After the operation of Metro Line 5 this year, you can get there quickly from the Huayuan Road subway exit.
The long locomotive, ancient alleys, posters, cultural corridors, old cars, old carriages, rickshaws. The details of the simulation are really touching. I thought I had mistakenly entered the set of a Republican drama. The garden architecture reflects the Republic of China style that combines Chinese and Western elements. The Republic of China cultural wall, bell tower, rickshaws, and classic cars are full of ancient meanings. Whenever night falls, the lights on the entire street will light up, giving people a dreamy feeling of "I don't know what year it is today".
In addition to the architectural features and humanistic elements of the Republic of China, it is also a film and television shooting base, inheriting a unique historical and cultural atmosphere. It also combines cultural industries, garden B&Bs, light luxury food, etc. And it's full of literary sentiment.
Lican Street
The Canli plot formed on the original site of the Xushuguan Silkworm Breeding Farm in the High-tech Zone is one of the theme blocks of the terminal project. The gray brick walls, arched corridors, and stone pavements on the ground are full of the architectural style of the Republic of China, which will instantly transport you back to the 1930s~
In addition to the places mentioned above, there are also: Su Lunchang, Su University, Huayi Brothers Movie World.
Day 2: One-day tour of classic routes in the ancient city of Suzhou (with recommended check-in points)
Suzhou Museum - Prince Zhong’s Mansion Humble Administrator’s Garden Pingjiang Road
No. One stop: Suzhou Museum
It can be said that this is a place that everyone who comes to Suzhou for the first time must want to visit, and it is also the starting point of our route. Taking Subo as the starting point, firstly, it is famous because it was designed by a master of design, attracting an endless stream of people to check in; secondly, as the most intuitive presentation of the cultural connotation of a city, the museum is the best start for us to understand a city. Let’s start with Subo as our first stop.
Keywords: Architecture
Su Bo’s color palette uses traditional white walls and black tiles as elements, adding new interpretations to Jiangnan architectural symbols. In terms of building structure, the design of the roof shape breaks through the constraints of the "big roof" of traditional Chinese architecture in terms of lighting. The glass and open steel structure allows the room to borrow large skylights.
Su Bo’s garden design is the essence extracted from Suzhou classical gardens. The creative landscape garden composed of ponds, rockeries, small bridges, pavilions, and bamboo forests is organically combined with traditional gardens
The adjustment and filtering of soft-colored shading strips creates layered changes, as well as the light and shade of different spaces. The contrast seems to make the surrounding lines flow, making people enter a poetic and picturesque mood, which is wonderful.
I.M. Pei loves triangular shapes and light. "Let light design" is Bayes' famous saying. The combination of light and space creates changes in light and shadow through simple geometric lines, making the space changeable and making the scenery change with footsteps, perspective, and mood. In the process of changing scenery, people use the flicker of light to create a sense of wonder. Different sights and feelings. The light changes in various corridors of Subo are the most contemplative scenery besides the exhibits and buildings.
Keywords: National Treasure
Most people are more interested in Subo’s architecture than its collection, thinking that Subo’s collection is average. In fact, many of the items in Subo’s collection are worth seeing.
One of them is the Zhuzhen Relic Tower, which was featured on CCTV's "National Treasure". This building integrates Suzhou's wood carving, gold painting, jade carving, pearl threading, and exquisite gold and silver craftsmanship at that time. The entire treasure house uses more than 40,000 pearls, which embodies the wisdom and efforts of the skilled craftsmen at that time. It can be called Su Bo's "treasure of the town hall".
Photo spots
1. On the curved bridge in the yard, you can take pictures of the symmetrical Su Bo architecture.
2. On a sunny day, the glass shadow of the Wisteria Garden can take particularly beautiful portrait photos.
3. From the corridor with pure white walls to Prince Zhong’s Mansion, the white walls and black tiles blend with the white artistic conception of traditional Chinese painting. It is definitely a must-have for photography enthusiasts!
Second stop: Zhongwang Palace
Zhongyi Palace, a place ignored by many people, is worth a visit. It is part of the Suzhou Museum but no longer serves as an exhibition. Because its architectural style is very different from Subo, it is often ignored by tourists. But in fact, it contains Qian Kun, and the "national treasure" wisteria grown by hand in Wenheng Mountain is also in the current clock.
Keywords: Wenhengshan hand-planted wisteria
Wen Zhengming’s hand-planted wisteria is a famous ancient landscape in Suzhou gardens. It is located in a corner of the inner courtyard at the gate of the central garden of the original Humble Administrator's Garden. Now this area has been included in the Zhongyi Palace next door. This wisteria was planted by Wen Zhengming, one of the four great talents in Jiangnan, when he was building the Humble Administrator's Garden. Wen Zhengming was a famous calligrapher and painter in the Ming Dynasty and one of the founders of the Wu School.
He has a close relationship with Wang, the owner of the Humble Administrator's Garden. After the Humble Administrator's Garden was built, Wang often invited him to banquets and enjoy the scenery. Wen Zhengming is a nymphomaniac who likes wisteria. While enjoying himself in the Humble Administrator's Garden, he also planted this wisteria in the garden. It has been more than 400 years. The trunk of this wisteria tree has a diameter of 22 centimeters at breast height and is bent into the shape of a crane and a dragon. When it blooms, it has tassels hanging down like a string of purple jade. It is of great ornamental value and is known as one of the "Three Big Clams in Suzhou". On CCTV's "National Treasure" in February 2021.
It was once the Eight Banners Zhili Guild Hall, so many northern architectural styles and features have been integrated into Suzhou's architectural style. For example, the "Siheyuan" in Suzhou is unique among classical architecture in Suzhou.
In addition, the guild hall is a gathering place for fellow villagers and a place for merchants to discuss trade, often with a stage. The classic stage is a building on Zhongwangfu East Road. It was built by the Fengzhi Guild Hall of the Eight Banners using the courtyard of the southern courtyard. After several repairs, it still basically maintains its original appearance. It is one of the best-preserved indoor classical stages in China.
Photography spots
On a sunny afternoon, the wisteria garden will form obvious light and dark segments under the sunlight, allowing you to take good photos.
The third stop: Humble Administrator's Garden
Exit Prince Zhong's Mansion, turn left slightly, then return to Northeast Street, and walk a few dozen steps further to reach the Four Famous Gardens of China. The Humble Administrator's Garden, one of the gardens, is the most famous tourist attraction in Suzhou.
This garden was built in the Ming Dynasty and designed by Wen Zhengming, one of the four great talents. I won’t go into details about the history of the Humble Administrator’s Garden here. As long as I listen to the tour guide, I can probably understand it
Another wonderful thing about the Humble Administrator's Garden is looking at the "Snow Fragrant Cloud Pavilion" and Jiashi Pavilion opposite through the moon gate engraved with "青夜" The beautiful scenery will also make people feel that the "ingenuity" of the ancients in gardening is really good.
Keywords: The four seasons are different.
The Humble Administrator’s Garden has different seasons, condensing the most beautiful colors of Suzhou into a small garden. Spring in the city's mountain forests is bright green; lotus ponds are pink in summer; the aerial photography of the Humble Administrator's Garden in autumn is truly "beautiful"; and if you are lucky enough to see the Humble Administrator's Garden after snow, you almost have the chance to travel through it. Back to ancient times.
The fourth stop: Pingjiang Road
For the fourth stop, we came out of the Humble Administrator's Garden, crossed Northeast Street, and went south along Baijia Lane to Pingjiang Road. There are two ways to visit Pingjiang, one is by boat and the other is on foot. Taking a boat allows you to get close to the water and experience the real "see you in Suzhou, people will sleep on the river"; walking is very leisurely, and strolling in the urban water town is not fun at all.
Keywords: Linjiang Street
Anyone who has listened to the introduction of Suzhou’s urban history should have heard the saying “the land and water run side by side, and the rivers and streets are adjacent to each other”. The model of "water and land running side by side, rivers and streets adjacent" is Pingjiang Road. Not only is there Pinghe River on the main street, but almost every side street is accompanied by a small river. This criss-crossing "double chessboard" pattern has lasted for thousands of years in the ancient city of Suzhou.
If you happen to have a copy of "Pingjiang Picture" from the Song Dynasty, you can try to find it while walking along the roadside in Pingjiang. You can still find them in almost every alley on the map.
Keywords: hand-cranked boat
Roading on Pingjiang is the best way to experience Suzhou on the water. The boats in the river, the people on the shore, the white walls and black tiles are the true character of Suzhou. A small boat carries the charm of Suzhou. Whether on the shore or on the boat, both sides have become each other's scenery.
When riders rock the boat on the Pingjiang River, you can also hear boat girls or boatmen singing boat songs. This is a way for boatmen to express their joy.
