Psychoanalysis can be said to be the world's first professional psychotherapy. Psychoanalysis has gone through several generations of development so far. Classic psychoanalysis is based on Freud's theory of neurotic anxiety. Psychoanalysts believe that the root of any maladaptive behavior is childhood experiences and infantile thoughts and emotions that continue to affect life. Insights into the growth process in childhood can help to adopt more mature and effective ways to make life happier. , will also make life in adulthood more dynamic. At the same time, psychoanalysis also believes that all psychological behavioral abnormalities are related to some kind of efforts to satisfy instinctive desires that are fixed in the early development stage. If a person experiences obstacles in the process of development, there will be a conflict between instinctive desires and fear of punishment. Such desires and fears, although occurring at some stage in childhood, are carried into adolescence and adulthood due to fixation.

As a kind of epiphany therapy, psychoanalytic treatment attempts to remove early repression and help patients face childhood conflicts, so as to gain epiphany and solve them according to adult realistic methods.

Psychoanalytic theory originated from the clinical practice of mental illness. As the first professional treatment method, it opened up a new way of psychotherapy and made a huge contribution to the research and clinical practice of abnormal psychology. Psychoanalytic theory enables people to understand normal and abnormal behaviors from the surface to the depths of the heart, making people realize that psychological problems are actually the result of the struggle of various forces in the inner world. Although psychoanalysis is widely used, its evaluation by academic circles is mixed. The focus of criticism is that the source of Freud's theory is based on subjective experience and logical deduction, which lacks factual basis and is difficult to be scientifically verified. In addition, Freud's research samples came from patients with mental illness, so some people suspect that he confused the difference between normal people and patients with mental disorders.
