Xincheng was called "New City" in ancient times and has always been an important town in western Jiaxing.

It was formed in the first year of Huichang (841) in the Tang Dynasty.

The name of Xincheng first appeared in the records of "Qingbo Magazine" written by Zhou Hui in the Song Dynasty as "Shaoxing Office, Zeng Lu Gong Prime Minister Quan Jiahe Xincheng Tax".

During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Xincheng had become the top of the four major towns in Xiushui County and the economic, transportation and cultural center of northwest Jiaxing.

Xincheng is also an ancient town with a glorious revolutionary tradition. It is the main activity area of ??the Communist Party of China’s revolutionary struggle in northern Zhejiang.

The ancient town is located in the Jiangnan Water Town and is a typical Jiangnan Water Town ancient town.

The town is built on the river. The Shihe Xinxi River runs through the town from west to east. It is connected to Yanmutang in the west and Xinchengtang in the east. The total length is 1680 meters. The streets are built along the river, forming two streets with the Shihe River as the axis.

The old streets on both sides of the city river are the largest and most well-preserved ancient town blocks in Jiaxing. The houses are built along the water, row upon row, and the layout is regular and concise. "Everyone is leaning on the river, and the water is flowing through small bridges." This continues the Jiangnan style of water alleys and streets.

Most of the buildings facing the street are two-story brick and wood structures with rows of shops, with strict and symmetrical layout and simple and concise style.

Several of the better buildings have the typical front hall and back hall pattern of Jiangnan water towns, with multiple patios, courtyards, and stone warehouse gates. The gate towers and beams are carefully carved and intricate, and the fire sealing walls are mostly constructed with Guanyin pockets with local characteristics.

The white walls and black tiles, the river revetments, small bridges and flowing water and the people's houses set off each other, with beautiful outlines, elegant colors, poetic and picturesque scenery, and a strong Jiangnan ancient town style.

There are currently Jiaxing Local Party History Exhibition Hall (former residence of the Xu family), a county-level cultural relic protection unit, Wujiabang Site, and Shen Benqian’s former residence, a cultural relic protection site.

Other cultural relics and historic sites include Nengren Temple, Silkworm Palace, Wensong Bridge, Guanyin Bridge, Fengming Bridge, Xiaolingjiu Mountain Museum Tuyong Carving Stone, Xiao Penglai and other relatively complete and relatively large-scale traditional houses such as Wu Runzhao Private House.

Xincheng brand rapeseed oil, especially Xincheng brand rapeseed oil, has been awarded the title of National Green Food, Zhejiang Famous Brand Agricultural Products, Jiaxing City Famous Trademark and Jiaxing City Famous Brand Product.
