Laba Festival, which is the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month every year, is also known as the "Dharma Treasure Festival", "Buddha Enlightenment Festival", "Enlightenment Meeting", etc.; on this day, Laba porridge is eaten.
The Laba Festival was originally a Buddhist festival commemorating the enlightenment of Sakyamuni Buddha, and later gradually became a folk festival. The history of eating Laba porridge in our country has been more than a thousand years.
On Laba day, no matter the government, monasteries or ordinary people’s homes, they must make Laba porridge.
In the Qing Dynasty, the custom of drinking Laba porridge became even more popular.
During the pre-Qin period, some places in my country already had the custom of wax sacrifices related to "Laba". The festival fell in the twelfth lunar month, and the specific date was not fixed. This custom of wax sacrifices was regarded by later generations as one of the sources of the "Laba Festival".
According to the "Book of Rites: Jiao Te Sheng" compiled by Dai Shengshuo of the Western Han Dynasty, the wax offering is "in the twelfth month of the year, when all things are gathered together for a feast."
