On December 20, 1941, more than a thousand Japanese invaders and more than a hundred traitors suddenly surrounded Yuanziya Village on the banks of the Shushui River. The heroic villagers of Yuanziya Village faced the well-equipped enemy. Undeterred and unyielding, more than a thousand men, women, and children in the village used their walls and turrets to launch a bloody battle with the invading enemies armed with steel guns, using earthen cannons, wild goose guns, wooden sticks, broadswords, and stones. The fighting raged from early morning until dusk. Later, with the reinforcement of the Eighth Route Army's military work team, the enemy fled in panic. In this battle to defend Yuanziya, 147 villagers died heroically, and more than 100 Japanese invaders were killed and injured. More than 40 commanders and soldiers, including Banquan District Chief Feng Qiansan and District Party Committee Secretary Liu Xinyi, also spilled blood on Yuanziya. In May 1944, the Shushui County Council built a "Martyrs Memorial Tower" in the north of the village to commemorate the martyrs who died in the battle. The Binhai Special Administrative Office awarded the village the honorable title of "Anti-Japanese Model Village", and Yuanziya was also known as "The First Anti-Japanese Village in Shandong".
