1. Preparation
1. First of all, the Burmese tortoises that can hibernate should be kept healthy by the owner for at least three months, because this can ensure that the owner has mastered the correct raising methods. , to ensure that the Burmese tortoise is already very familiar with its living environment. Secondly, the Burmese tortoises preparing to hibernate should be larger, and the length of the plastron should be 10 centimeters which is the safest. Thirdly, Burmese tortoises preparing for hibernation should be healthy and free of any disease.
2. To be precise, the preparations started in the summer. The temperature is high in summer, which is the season when the growth rate of Burmese tortoises is the highest. In summer, you should seize the opportunity to feed Burmese tortoises "white and fat" to keep them healthy.
3. During the transition between autumn and winter, when the ambient daytime temperature is 20 degrees, you can start preparing for the hibernation of Burmese tortoises. First of all, the owner should make an evaluation of his feeding during this period to see whether the Burmese in his hand has enough energy to survive the winter and whether it is healthy. Second, stop eating completely. When the temperature drops in autumn, the Burmese tortoise begins to eat less. Once the temperature rises, its appetite increases. However, once it starts to hibernate, it will not feed at all. Even if the temperature rises one day, the Burmese tortoise will look for food everywhere when it is hungry. Be cruel and refuse to feed. When my Burmese tortoise is hungry, it will look for food everywhere like crazy, and will even eat millet regardless of whether it can eat it or not. At this time, it is necessary to ensure that there are no foreign objects in its activity environment to prevent the Burmese tortoise from being hungry and unselective.
4. Take a bath every day while there is still sunlight, and soak in warm water to promote excretion of the turtle. Why not feed it and then let it poop? The purpose is to empty the stomach. Some owners think that if the intestines are empty, then the Burmese tortoise will starve to death during hibernation! The temperature in winter is low for a long time, and hibernating Burmese tortoises do not eat. What supports Burmese tortoises through the winter is not the food residues in their intestines, but the body fat nutrients stored in summer and autumn. The metabolic rate of hibernating turtles is extremely low and the intestinal function is very weakened. If the intestines are filled with food at this time, the food will be difficult to digest. Over time, the undigested food will deteriorate and ferment, causing gastrointestinal bloating in turtles. , and then secondary intestinal diseases, which are very harmful to hibernating turtles and may deteriorate rapidly, causing the turtles to be unable to wake up in the next year. Soak in the bath until no stool passes for four to five days in a row.
2. Officially entering hibernation
Burmese tortoises like a damp and quiet environment. For hibernation, you can choose a quiet corner and use a large container as the hibernation environment. When the temperature reaches 16-18 degrees, Burmese tortoises will basically become inactive. At this time, they will hibernate in a dark environment. You can find them, put them in the environment you prepared, cover them with a wet towel, and check them every week. once.
The environment used can be a turtle nest: a large cardboard box with a waterproof film on the bottom, then vermiculite, and then hay, which allows Burmese tortoises to crawl inside and rest.
During hibernation, Burmese tortoises will burrow deep into the hay to hibernate. Cover the top with a wet and soft towel. Observe once a week. Replenish water when it is time to replenish it, and replace hay when it is moldy. At the same time, check whether there are any abnormalities in the tortoise. Burmese tortoises with abnormalities should stop hibernating and switch to heated hibernation. Throughout the hibernation period, do not intentionally disturb hibernating turtles unless necessary for inspection. When the temperature rises in the coming year, Burmese tortoises will crawl out on their own, usually around March.
Note the following points:
First of all, tortoises are produced all over the world. Unless your home is the place where tortoises are produced, or the environment at home is very close to the place where tortoises are produced, otherwise Don't try to hibernate your tortoise lightly.
Secondly, if the tortoise on your hand is still a juvenile, it cannot hibernate, and even sub-adult hibernation is dangerous. Such individuals should be warmed up for the winter.
