According to Thailand's "Bangkok Post" report, the Cultural Heritage Protection and Promotion Committee of the Ministry of Culture of Thailand passed a decision at a meeting on May 28 to apply for the inclusion of Tom Yum Goong soup in the United Nations Intangible Cultural Heritage List in early 2020.
Tom Yum soup is the most representative Thai "national soup".
"Tom Yum" means hot and sour in Thai, and "Gong" means shrimp. This dish is commonly known as "hot and sour shrimp soup". It uses shrimp as the main raw material, cooked with spices and coconut milk.
It is also very popular in Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia.
In the near future, Thailand will hold public hearings involving major culinary schools and the Thai Culinary Association to collect as much information as possible about Tom Yum Goong soup.
So far, eight categories of food, including French cuisine, Japanese cuisine, and Italian Neapolitan pizza, have been approved to be included in the World Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
Now, in addition to Tom Yum soup, baguettes are also preparing to apply for World Heritage status.
UNESCO has put forward five requirements for the application of intangible cultural heritage projects, and these requirements also apply to the food category.
"Can be defined as 'intangible' cultural heritage"; "Promote people's exchanges, reflect the world's cultural diversity, and highlight human creativity"; "The applied project already has relevant protection and publicity measures"; "As many as possible
"People and groups participate in the nomination process and agree to apply for World Heritage"; the applied project is already on the list of existing intangible cultural heritage in their country.
