Nine vegetable markets in Xiamen
If prosperity is the face of a city, then the hidden vegetable market in downtown is its lining. The vegetable market is the center of a city's daily life. It is a gathering place of human feelings and food, which accommodates the flavor and fireworks of the city.
since the 192s, there have been nine vegetable markets in Xiamen, which witnessed the tenderness of the bustling streets of old Xiamen.
the first vegetable market
The old city market and the city edge market in the old Xiamen population are located at the intersection of Gucheng East Road, Zhongshan Road.
The first vegetable market is no longer the original appearance, but has become a "food street with southern Fujian characteristics", and only the preserved market signs can be traced. The first market built in 1928 is the earliest farmer's market in history.
the second vegetable market
nowadays, I only hear about "Ershi Station", but I don't know that it is actually named after the second vegetable market. The second vegetable market, which once left a warm memory for Xiamen citizens, was replaced by a tall Meiren Palace building. The Meiren Palace vegetable market opened on the ground floor is actually a continuation of the two markets, and the flower and bird market on the Xi 'an Road is more widely known.
The third vegetable market
is located in Bishan Road, Xiamen Port, between Siming South Road and minzu road. The market has disappeared, the original site has been completed as a residential building, and the market has also moved to the opposite side to become a "Bishan Road Vegetable Market". Today, there is only one store selling dried meat floss, named "Xianggong Gongsan Branch", which adheres to this historical memory.
The fourth vegetable market
is located in the south of Yuantong Center on Siming North Road, between Siming North Road and Kaiyuan Road. The market has disappeared, and only the doorplate on the wall of the storefront along the street remains in the old site.
The only memory that remains may be Sibei Texiangbao. This old shop for more than 2 years is still open at the intersection of the Fourth Market, and many old Xiamen people still buy several freshly baked Texiangbao to take home every day.
The Fifth Vegetable Market
The former Fifth Market was located in the downtown area of the old city of Xiamen, in the alley behind the China Cinema, hidden around Laiya Department Store, the main business district of Zhongshan Road, where people used to call it "Shanghai Street".
In the Guide to New Xiamen published during the fall of Xiamen in p>1941, the fifth market has mysteriously disappeared, and the specific reasons are difficult to verify. The fifth vegetable market, which should be the most lively, has disappeared silently in the long river of history.
The Sixth Vegetable Market
is located at the intersection of Taishan Road, Narcissus Road and Diaozi Road. The once prosperous Sixth Vegetable Market is the most complete existing appearance. During the Republic of China, the old market in Xiamen has disappeared now, and the whole building has become a residence. There are sporadic vendors and vegetable farmers selling goods downstairs.
the sixth market is connected to Taishan road, and it still retains the original architectural style of the Republic of China, and the facade decoration of buildings along the road has a strong Nanyang style.
The seventh vegetable market
is located between Datong Road and Siming East Road, which is still an old market. Every morning, there are always old Xiamen people who buy food by bus. Eight markets buy seafood and seven markets buy vegetables, which has become the general law of old Xiamen people. The distance between the two markets is not far, and they are both on Datong Road.
The eighth vegetable market
is located at the intersection of Kaihe. Someone summed it up like this: "Leaping in the downtown harbor, loving in the narrow lanes of the old city." Bashi is the oldest and richest vegetable market in Xiamen, and it is also a hiding place for gourmet gluttony.
Bashi has become the largest farmer's market in Xiamen Island, and it is also the market with the most complete products among the nine markets. Compared with the gradual shrinkage of most old markets in Xiamen due to the rise of modern supermarkets, Bashi has achieved a reverse growth, gorgeous fashion is the keynote of Xiamen, and it is lively and enthusiastic, and even the loyalty of rivers and lakes is Bashi.
The ninth vegetable market
is located at the intersection of Siming South Road and Ding 'an Road. The market has disappeared and turned into the Tiger City Seafood Food Street, and there is an important business district Chinatown nearby.
There are not many historical records about Jiushi. The last time it appeared in the newspaper, it was reported by Xiamen Daily on January 15th, 1957 that the Ninth Market was refreshed.
