?Shiyan, a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Hubei Province, is located in the northwest of Hubei Province, bordering the three counties and cities of Hubei Baokang, Gucheng, and Laohekou to the east, Xichuan County of Henan to the northeast, and Shangnan, Shanyang, and Zhenan of Shaanxi to the north.

It borders 3 counties, Anbaihe, Xunyang, Pingli and Zhenping counties in Shaanxi Province to the west, and Shennongjia County of Hubei Province and Wuxi County of Chongqing City to the south.

Bounded between 31°30′ and 33°16′ north latitude and 109°29′ and 111°16′ east longitude, it has a subtropical monsoon climate.

The total area under its jurisdiction is 23,600 square kilometers, with jurisdiction over 4 counties, 1 city, and 3 districts, with a registered population of 3.475 million.

In the Xia Dynasty, the Shiyan area belonged to Liangzhou and Yuzhou.

Around 611 B.C., the Chu State invaded the north, destroyed Yong and Houhou, and established Hanzhong County in Yongdi and Shangyong County in Yongdu. The Shiyan area belonged to Chu.

In 1948, all counties in Shiyan area belonged to southern Shaanxi District.

In 1952, it was included in the Xiangyang Special Administration Bureau and later belonged to the Xiangyang area.

In 1969, Shiyan City was established.

In 1973, it was changed to a provincial municipality.

Shiyan is the core city of the ecological and cultural tourism circle in western Hubei. It is home to Wudang Mountain, the world-famous Taoist holy site, and the Danjiangkou Reservoir, the source of water diversion for the Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project.

It has successively won the honorary titles of National Sanitary City, National Livable City, National Best Ecological Protection City, National Garden City, and National Forest City.

Famous scenic spots include Wudang Mountain, Danjiangkou Reservoir, etc.

On December 24, 2017, Shiyan was selected into the Top 200 Charming Cities with Chinese Characteristics in 2017.
