The National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) took two years to produce a large-scale original drama Wangfujing. The work shows the ups and downs of Wangfujing, the "first street of Chinese commerce" for a hundred years with a grand narrative panorama.

As an active art production organization, the National Centre for the Performing Arts has always dreamed of writing a drama for Beijingers to show their profound spiritual heritage and heroic national integrity. For a long time, people's impression of Beijingers has been single, biased and superficial. In fact, this group of Li people at the foot of the imperial city are not only straightforward and enthusiastic, but also pay attention to their mind and tolerance, and attach importance to integrity and righteousness. The National Centre for the Performing Arts hopes to sketch a spiritual portrait for Beijingers through this play.

Wangfujing, as the "No.1 Street in China", embodies the vicissitudes of a century and bears the heavy spirit of Beijingers. This unusual golden street has naturally become a powerful carrier of this play. In the play, Wangfujing is not only the old street in reality, but also a symbol of the spiritual core, which is the hardworking, passionate, tenacious, tolerant and optimistic spirit of Beijingers!

The whole drama tells the ups and downs of Wangfujing commercial street from 191 to 1948. The work takes Tong Shouchun, a hat shop in Ludinghong, as the main line, supplemented by Wang Ye, the eunuch of Fushenglou, Cai Xianer, Xia Jinghong and other merchants who fry the liver in Xianrenju, and reflects the vicissitudes of life of Wangfujing century-old street. In order to protect the plaque, the Tong family exchanged the life of the eldest son for the rare fur "Hailong", and promised that the merchant's business ethics was "the guest is the sky, and it should be comprehensive". The fire destroyed the whole street, but the hearts of Wangfujing merchants did not collapse. They rescued the old plaque from the fire. Under the leadership of Tong Shouchun, the heads of many businesses resisted the evil forces headed by Xiao Manjin, and mortgaged their stores and lives to keep Cai Xianer from being killed by the mutinous soldiers. "Keep morality and not keep money." In the face of Japanese swords and guns, the merchants in Wangfujing are indomitable. Tong Shouchun's son Tong Ankang and eunuch Xi Ye both died to protect the plaque and the street. Grandpa Xi contradicts people's single impression of the eunuch's negative side, "exchange his rootless life for this street with roots." After decades of wind and rain, Tong Shouchun and Wang Ye, the most capable and intelligent people in this street, fought all their lives. In the cold place of the prison, they replaced wine with water, and they said something warm, and their grievances and enmities vanished. The report apologized for the humiliation of the old Tong shopkeeper's legs, and entrusted Tong Shouchun with his old plaque and his beloved woman Yuner, and sat down by himself. In troubled times, Tong Shouchun, who should have closed his shop, couldn't move his legs at this moment. He wanted to watch, watch this shop, watch this plaque, and watch this street ...
