Ling, a native of Wuxi, was an outstanding painter, painting theorist and poet in the Eastern Jin Dynasty.

Gu Kaizhi was erudite and talented, good at poetry, calligraphy, and especially painting. He was known as the three masters: painting, writing and crazy. Together with Cao Buxing, Lu Tanwei, and Zhang Sengyao, he was known as the "Four Masters of the Six Dynasties".

Gu Kaizhi's works include "Portrait of King Sima Xuan", "Portrait of Xie An", "Portrait of Liu Lao", "Portrait of Emperor Jin Xiang", "Picture of the Beauty of King Guiyang", etc. Among them are "Picture of Proverbs of the Female History", "Picture of Fu of Luo Shen" and "Picture of Column".

Ni Zan was good at painting landscapes and ink bamboos. He learned from Dong Yuan and was influenced by Zhao Mengxi. In his early years, his painting style was clear and smooth. In his later years, he changed his style and became plain and innocent. Together with Huang Gongwang, Wang Meng and Wu Zhen, he was known as the "Four Yuan Painters".

His extant works include "Picture of Autumn at Yuzhuang", "Picture of Six Gentlemen", "Picture of Rong Xi Zhai", etc. He is also the author of "Qingge Collection".

A calligrapher and painter of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, he was an official in Linyi (now Linyi, Shandong).

He was good with Wang Xianzhi and studied under Wang Xizhi.
