Kaihua, an ordinary small town in western Zhejiang, is the source of the Qiantang River, the mother river of Zhejiang. It is located at the junction of seven counties in Zhejiang, Anhui and Jiangxi provinces. The main attractions are the source of the Qiantang River National Forest Park, Gutianshan National Nature Reserve. Such an elegant and simple town is my hometown, and over the years, I have grown up and matured, and it has also continued to progress and develop. I entered Hangzhou because I was admitted to university, but it became international because of a game.
That game was the 2014 World Bocce Championship. This is the first time the World Boccia (Women's Plastic Ball Team) Championship has been held in Asia. In addition to the Chinese team, there are also teams from nearly 20 countries including Italy, Australia, Argentina, Germany, and India. Because of this game, many foreign teams gathered in Kaihua to compete on the court and compete with each other on the court. After the game, they enjoyed the beautiful scenery of Kaihua, tasted Kaihua delicacies, and felt the culture of Kaihua.
This game lasted for 8 days, but it was enough time for players from all over the world to demonstrate their superb skills and learn about civilized culture in their spare time. Although the Argentine team won the championship in the end, it is undeniable that players from all over the world put in all their efforts and were in the most perfect condition. This civilized bocce competition is an opportunity to bring players from all over the world together. On the surface, it looks like a competition, but in fact it is an exchange, a competition, and a mutual exchange of sports culture. The training of sports personnel is closed and branded. In other words, each team has its own strategies and unique skills, so in this kind of open competition, everyone can compete head-on to learn and improve their abilities together.
The impact of a competition goes beyond this, it will also bring exchanges of culture, art, food, and people-to-people exchanges. After the competition, the athletes also visited the Kaihua Root Sculpture Park, a national 5A-level scenic spot. As the name suggests, Kaihua root carving is when craftsmen carve the best tree roots into images of Buddha or animals. It represents the culture and art of Kaihua to a large extent. The visits of players from various countries are actually taking the initiative to understand the art of civilization. When you walk into the garden, you can hear the white doves chirping in the densely shaded branches, and you can immediately feel the unique scent of the root carvings coming towards you. Under the dual sense of hearing and smell, when you enter the garden, you will inevitably be more or less influenced by root carving culture and enlightenment culture. During the visit, the organizing committee carefully provided commentators for players from various countries. While the players asked the commentators about the materials and symbolic meanings of root art works, they kept posing unique poses, making strange expressions and root carvings. Taking a group photo, they looked very excited. "I didn't expect that there would be such a unique root art theme park in Kaihua, a small county in China. It's so amazing and shocking. I have never seen such spectacular and strange root carvings before. Kaihua It’s so great and beautiful, even more beautiful than Shanghai I’ve been to.” Jacobs from the American team told reporters excitedly, “When I go home, I must share such a beautiful scenery with my family, and I must take it with me if I have the opportunity. Let your family come here to see Kaihua and get close to nature." When he walked into the Five Hundred Arhats Exhibition Hall and saw the unique and magnificent Five Hundred Arhats statue, Turkmen Mutlu, the leader of the Turkish team, told reporters that he had never seen it before. After seeing this kind of scenery, I was very impressed and I was very satisfied with the itinerary arranged by the organizing committee. Watching the foreign players in the news reports praise the root carving one after another and praise them without hesitation, I feel proud and proud. I am glad that there is such a root carving garden in Kaihua, which makes foreign friends fall in love with it and dance for it. This is a kind of exchange on the artistic and cultural level, allowing international friends to see the exquisite carving skills of our Chinese craftsmen, Kaihua craftsmen, from the subtle hook to the meticulous precision of Kaihua people. Although this is a one-sided export, I am still happy and excited about this cultural export.
The players’ accommodation is arranged at the Kaihua Oriental Hotel. At the same time, the hotel also solves the catering problem for the athletes. In this World Championship, there are 21 teams from 20 countries and regions. As the saying goes, it is difficult to agree with one another. With so many athletes coming from different places, how can we, the host, solve their food problem? What kind of food should be prepared? Are they satisfied with their diet? Kaihua Oriental Hotel solves all the above problems very well. Wu Wenhui, chef of Kaihua Oriental Hotel, said: "There are many participating countries this time, and our food will be customized according to the flavors of each country as much as possible." For this competition, the hotel chefs also went to the Oriental Headquarters and other hotels for training and study. Each area in the hotel's buffet restaurant is clearly defined: vegetable and fruit salad area, bread area, snack area, special dish area, beverage area, open stalls... Taking into account the preferences of foreign athletes, in addition to various beverages and mineral water, the beverage area also places Lemonade and ice cubes are provided, and athletes can help themselves as needed. A wide variety of breads and pastries are available. There are toasts, pastel meal buns, red bean buns, maple sugar croissant, mini Danish cookies, fruit cakes... I won’t go into details about the variety and color, but I think you can feel it too. In addition to these, of course, Kaihua's special delicacies are also indispensable. Chinese athletes are no strangers to Qingsi. “Everyone ate it very happily because we have all seen Qingsi from “Bite of the Tongue”.” Zhang Yixin, a member of the Chinese team, said in an interview, “At the beginning, everyone didn’t know how to smoke it. Qingsi, I even asked the hotel waiter for advice, and now I finally know the ropes."
In addition to Qingsi, Kaihua's signature dishes Qingshui Fish, Ma Jin Dried Tofu, Suzhuang Cooked Rice Noodles and other famous Kaihua specialties are also on the list. The hotel also specially set up a Chinese and English introduction board for Kaihua specialties at the entrance of the restaurant. This will not only allow foreign athletes to better understand the characteristics of Kaihua, but also make the reputation of Kaihua cuisine spread across the ocean through their mouths. Giuseppe, the leader of the German team, is very satisfied with the food in this competition: "I am very satisfied with the food in the hotel. I like Chinese food very much and will eat Chinese food in Germany. I like eating snails very much, but I haven't tried it yet. I’ll try it tomorrow. I’m not usually a big fan of cakes, but the Kaihua air cake tastes great. Also, I like rice very much, and I think I would be able to adapt to the food here very well.” The food here has very obvious regional characteristics, being spicy and colorful. I believe the athletes have already experienced the wonders of Kaihua cuisine. Kaihua has successfully used food as a medium to deepen international friends’ understanding and love for Kaihua.
Kaihua not only has delicious food that can stir people's heartstrings, but also has beautiful natural scenery. During the competition, some teams wanted to smell the fresh air and enjoy the wonderful scenery of lakes and mountains because it was not yet the competition day. So the volunteers took the athletes to Yu Village in the countryside of Yinkeng. It is a beautiful countryside surrounded by mountains and rivers. It mainly develops tourism, which also drives the outdoor barbecue industry in the area. When they arrived at their destination, the athletes imitated the Chinese rowing bamboo rafts and swung on the clear green water. I thought that it was autumn, and there would be wisps of autumn wind passing over the water, causing ripples, and blowing the aroma of barbecue from a distance, making the athletes greedy. Sure enough, the athletes did as the Romans do and had a barbecue in the countryside. Kaihua itself is mostly mountainous and has good vegetation coverage. At a glance, there are many mountains and layers of different shades of green that can easily catch people's attention. The athletes were also immersed in the greenery in front of them and intoxicated by the refreshing wind blowing from the mountains. This rural outing also eased the athletes’ nervousness during the competition to a certain extent.
My hometown is really ordinary, extremely ordinary. It is precisely because its economic development level is not high and economic construction cannot be carried out that the government built it into a tourist town. But an international competition that I never expected brought this unknown town to the world, showing its civilized style and Chinese culture, making a small but not negligible contribution to the exchange of Chinese and foreign cultures.
