My hometown is at the foot of Chengshan, a mountain village named after Chengshan. According to legend, Xue Lei took a fancy to this mountain when he was out of date in the east road, so he built a city on the top of this mountain and sent troops. Taking this as the center, he built a beacon tower every ten miles to resist the invasion of the kingdom of Korea. The truth of this legend remains to be verified, but a story told by my grandfather is true: in the autumn of 1935, after the Japanese invaders brutally encircled the anti-Japanese allied forces, they planned to build a gun tower and a district "yamen" on the city hill. When a Japanese soldier Shaozuo led a group of troops into the turtle pond at the foot of the city hill, a chinemys reevesii suddenly jumped out of the water, and the foreign horse that Shaozuo rode suddenly screamed and threw Shaozuo off his horse. The young sergeant was a superstitious guy.
