When did Tunxi Old Street in Huizhou originate?

Many old streets in Huizhou were developed from the former water transport pier, and Tunxi Old Street is the most famous one.

The old street originated in the Song Dynasty and became the material distribution center in Huizhou in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. At first, it was just a curved street called "Bajiazhan", and now the road next to Tunxi Old Bridge is where the former eight shops were located. It can be said that this is the real place of Tunxi Old Street. It is the birthplace of Tunxi. From the "Bajiazhan" in the west to the inscription on the memorial archway of the old street in the east, the whole old street is 1,273 meters long and 7 meters wide, and the road surface is paved with large pieces of ochre stones. Many buildings on both sides of Tunxi Old Street inherit the style of Lin 'an (today's Hangzhou), the capital of the Southern Song Dynasty, thanks to Song Huizong. When he moved the capital, he recruited many Huizhou craftsmen to build Song Cheng. Therefore, Tunxi Old Street is also known as "Song Cheng Today". While inheriting the architectural style of the Southern Song Dynasty, the houses on both sides of the old street also reflect the characteristics of Huizhou architecture. The houses are small in size, with elegant colors and exquisite shapes. The white horse-headed wall, the roof covered with small blue tiles, the beautiful carved barrels on the window sills, and the octagonal exquisite lights hanging from the lintels are all full of rich Huizhou ancient charm.

As shops, most of the buildings on both sides of the old street are designed as front shops and back squares, front shops and back storehouses, front shops and back residences, or upstairs storehouses. The places where shops face the street are flexible rows of doors. When the rows of doors are removed, the shops are fully unfolded, which is convenient for business. Houses whose shops are not facing the street adopt patio-style layout, that is, the patio is used for lighting, which means "four waters return to the hall", which means "gathering wealth". It is this exquisite and rich architecture that has ushered in the reputation of "a moving riverside scene at Qingming Festival" for Tunxi Old Street.

The shops on Tunxi Old Street mainly sell antique calligraphy and painting, Four Treasures of the Study, bonsai root carvings, some local products and tourist souvenirs. There are many shops selling antiques. Shopkeepers mostly collect some antiquities from local people to decorate their shops, and sell them to tourists, but these things are expensive. A bronze mirror is said to be from Qianlong period, and the shopkeeper may ask 5 yuan for it. There are also some famous time-honored brands with a century-old history in Tunxi Old Street, such as "Tongderen" drugstore, "Tonghe" weighing shop and "Cheng Dexin" sauce garden.

Tongderen drugstore was opened in Qing Dynasty. It has a history of 12 years. The layout of the store is still ancient, and the Chinese medicine business is still managed by grasping prescriptions. The weighing instruments seem to have some history. The most commendable thing here is the dedication of the staff in the store.

When I was photographing the small scale weighing on the counter in the store, an old man came over and told me how to place it correctly, saying that if I photographed the wrong small scale, It will be laughed at by peers. The landmark film "Little Flower" in China film history was taken in Tongderen, which attracted directors from China and even the world to Tunxi Old Street. Up to now, more than 1 film and television works have been filmed in Tunxi Old Street.

Wancui Building is the first private museum in the form of ancient buildings in China, and it is also the crystallization of many years' collection and design by its owner, Mr. Wan Renhui. Wancui Building was bought by Mr. Wan in 1996. It is mainly used for the exhibition of private collections. The layout of the whole building and the cultural relics in each room are designed according to Huizhou style, and it took three years before and after. Wancui Building has four floors, the most interesting of which is the first floor.

The lobby "Jiubai Inkstone Hall" on the first floor mainly displays four famous inkstones and Four Treasures of the Study, especially a piece called "Kui Inkstone". A little behind the front hall, an antique small bridge was built by using the waterway in the house. There was a dragon algae well above the bridge, and the dragon's mouth spit out a ball of light. The whole layout took the meaning of "a round of red sunshine and nine continents", which looked very unique: on the west side of the main hall, the duty room and bathroom were built by the method of "wearing the coat inside" in Huizhou garden courtyard.

The duty room was hung with an Aetna plaque, and the men's and women's toilets were hung with a green sign. The rooms in the back hall on the first floor are arranged according to the rooms of ordinary people in ancient Huizhou. In fact, seemingly casual placement is very particular. There is an ancient clock in the middle of the desk, a vase on the left and a mirror on the right. The placement of these three things actually expresses the desire of Huizhou people to "keep the clock (bottle) quiet (mirror) all his life". In many ancient houses in Huizhou, such an old otaku culture is preserved. For example, porcelain, calligraphy and painting, and so on, where you can find many Chinese and foreign celebrities' improvisational works after visiting Wancui Building. The third floor is Mr. Wan's living room, and it is also a place to receive guests. If you are lucky enough to meet Mr. Wan at home, you will be able to chat with this gentle and elegant elder for a while. The fourth floor is a courtyard overlooking Tunxi Old Street and the surrounding old houses.
