Photographer jeffries (james stewart) had to rest at home for seven weeks because he broke his left leg standing in the middle of the track. Except for Stella (Hilma Ritter), a nurse from the insurance company, and his girlfriend Lisa Carol fremont (Grace Kelly), who takes care of him every day, bored jeffries can only pass the time by watching the daily life of his neighbor by the window. On the second floor of the apartment opposite, Lars Thorwald (raymond burr), an artificial jewelry salesman, lives with his wife Anna (Irene Winston), and there are frequent quarrels between husband and wife. On a rainy night, jeffries saw Lars go out with a box several times. The next day, jeffries saw Lars wrapped a saw and a knife in a newspaper. Jeffries began to doubt. He suspects that Lars killed Anna and dismembered her. However, jeffries did not witness the incident or see the body.
