It can be raised in clean water. River mussels themselves live in fresh water, so of course they can be raised in clean water.
If possible, it is best to lay a thick layer of sand in the tank. Don’t use too much water, just cover the mussels. Remember not to expose it to the sun, just put it in a cool place. In terms of feeding, river mussels have a wide range of food habits, mainly phytoplankton and zooplankton, but they can also eat decayed detritus of other aquatic plants and crustaceans. If raised together with fish, no special feeding is required, as river mussels will eat fish feces and food residues. If you raise river mussels alone, it is best to use sinking feed. If such feed is not available, you can use some carrion, scavengers or some smaller earthworms instead.
