It is called loose scale disease, and the pathogen is Trichoderma reesei. The disease is caused by frequent water changes, and it is difficult to cure because the water is not clean, the fish body is scratched off the scales and the water contains a small amount of oxygen, and the temperature of the water is too high, which often causes the disease. The scales of the fish grow outward like a pine ball from covering the fish's body surface flatly. The base of the scales is edematous. When the scales are gently pressed, they will fall off, and the fish will die in 2-3 days. The disease does not seem to be contagious, and is most common in goldfish, koi, perch and oviparous killifish, such as marys, moonfish and peacocks. It is more prevalent in spring every year, and the fish that suffer from it look so horrible that my scalp tingles when I think of it now. It's not easy to treat, and even if it is cured, the ornamental value is greatly reduced. So it's better to euthanize them.
