What is a fathead fish?

Fat-headed fish, commonly known as silver carp, is also known as fat-headed fish, big-headed fish, black silver carp, hemp carp, baotou fish, etc. In scientific classification, its Chinese name is bighead carp, which is one of the ray-finned fishes, Cypriniformes, family Cyprinidae.

Bighead carp has a flat side body, an extremely large head, and eyes in the lower part of the head. The back is dark black with irregular dark patches, and the abdomen is gray-white and rounded. The caudal fin is forked, with 3 hard spines and 7 soft rays in the dorsal fin, 1 to 3 hard spines in the anal fin, and 12 to 14 soft rays in the anal fin. The length of adult fish is usually around 60 centimeters, with the largest reaching 140 centimeters and weighing 40 kilograms.

Bighead carp lives in rivers and lakes, and mostly spends the winter in river beds and deep rock pits. It is distributed in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River Basin and is rare in Northeast and North China. It is one of the farmed fish in my country. It has a long history of breeding, and together with herring, grass carp and silver carp, it is known as the "four major fish" in China.

It is a warm-water fish. The suitable water temperature for growth is 25-30℃, and it can adapt to a more fertile water environment. Mild temperament and slow movement. From fry to adult stage, they mainly eat zooplankton and also eat phytoplankton. They are typical plankton-eating fish. Under artificial breeding conditions, they also eat artificial feed such as soybean cake, rice bran, and distiller's grains, as well as the excrement of livestock and poultry.
