The terminal cymes are sparse, with slender flower stalks and 2 scales under them. The calyx tube has five green ridges, the apex is 5-lobed, and the lobes are short and triangular. After flowering, the middle and lower parts of the calyx tube expand into prismatic spheres. Petals 5, separated, reddish, obovate, with irregular small teeth at the apex, spreading outward from the mouth of calyx tube, and the lower part tapering into claw; Stamens 10, unequal in length; Pistil 1, ovary elliptic, 1 official, style 2, slender. Capsule broadly ovoid, enclosed in calyx tube. The flowering period is from April to May. The fruit ripens in June.

Born in the hilly land near the field or cultivated land, especially in wheat fields. It is distributed in all regions of the country except South China.
