The Yellow River is one of the rivers with the highest sediment content, the most difficult control and serious water damage in the world. Due to the influence of natural factors such as geological structure and climate change, and human activities, the Yellow River has insufficient water and excessive sediment, which leads to the continuous rise of the downstream terrain and the formation of a suspended river on the ground. This special landform makes it easy for the Yellow River to break through dikes, change its course or burst its mouth, and cause floods.
In the face of the Yellow River flood, the Chinese nation has always fought against it, from Dayu's flood control to Pan Jixun's "harnessing water to attack sand", from the "blocking the mouth with a scorpion" in the period of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty to the period of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, the "river affairs and water transport" were engraved on the pillars of the court.
The Chinese nation has demonstrated its tenacious will to survive and creative spirit. The Yellow River, with its indomitable majestic momentum, has shaped the great character of the Chinese nation's self-improvement and become an important symbol of the national spirit.
In the protection and management of the Yellow River, the following major measures have been taken:
1 Build the "China Water Tower". Focusing on the source of the Three Rivers, we will strengthen the construction of water conservation capacity in the upper reaches of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, protect important water supply sites, strengthen desertification control in key areas, and reduce the excessive impact of human activities. By 2030, the pilot construction of the Sanjiangyuan National Park system will be basically completed.
2. Strengthen soil and water conservation in the middle reaches. Focus on the Loess Plateau, vigorously implement forest and grass protection and afforestation projects, enhance soil and water conservation capacity, and develop efficient dry farming. By 2030, the forest coverage rate of the Yellow River Basin will reach 22.5%, and the soil and water conservation rate will reach 70%.
3. Promote downstream wetland protection and ecological management. Focus on the Yellow River Delta, protect and restore the wetland ecosystem, build a green ecological corridor in the lower reaches of the Yellow River, and promote comprehensive ecological improvement in the beach area. By 2030, the wetland area in the Yellow River Delta will be more than 8,000 square kilometers.
