The scientific name of hypoglycemic grass is "white-backed notoginseng grass", also known as fairy grass. It is native to South Africa and is also known as a rich vegetable. Panax notoginseng is a perennial herb of Compositae.

You can safely overwinter without deliberate management. If you are not at ease, you can cover the roots of plants with soil or straw to keep warm after winter.
