1. Hawthorn leaves are the dried leaves of Rosaceae or hawthorn.
2. It is sour and flat in nature and taste, and returns to the liver meridian. It has the effects of activating blood circulation and removing blood stasis, regulating qi and unblocking meridians, resolving turbidity and lowering fat. It is mostly used clinically for qi stagnation and blood stasis, chest pain, chest tightness, palpitations, forgetfulness, dizziness, tinnitus, hyperlipidemia, etc.
3. Studies have found that hawthorn leaves can inhibit the death of myocardial cells caused by oxidative stress damage, reduce the leakage of lactate dehydrogenase and creatine kinase, and reduce the acetate in the culture medium after oxidative stress damage. Dialdehyde content increases superoxide dismutase activity and mitochondrial deoxygenase activity, and can inhibit the increase in cardiomyocyte apoptosis rate after oxidative stress injury.
4. These results indicate that the total flavonoids of hawthorn leaves may exert their anti-oxidative stress damage effects by reducing lipid peroxidation, increasing superoxide dismutase activity, and reducing apoptosis.
