Because it has tall and straight branches, it looks majestic and magnificent when the flowers bloom. Every March and April, the branches are covered with flowers. The petals are red and the stamens are golden, just like thousands of blazing torches. The sight of them makes people’s hearts beat with excitement and admiration, so it is called the “Hero Tree”. ".
The allusion that kapok is called the "hero tree" also comes from Hainan Island. It is said that in ancient times, there was a hero named Jibei in the Wuzhishan area of ??Hainan Island. He led the Li people to resist foreign enemies many times, made military exploits many times, and was loved by the people. Later, he was betrayed by a traitor and was besieged by the enemy on a mountain. He was hit by several arrows, but he still stood on the top of the mountain. His body turned into a kapok tree, the arrow feathers turned into branches, and his blood turned into bright red flowers. In memory of him, later generations called kapok the hero tree and kapok the hero flower. It is said that when Su Dongpo was demoted to Hainan in the Song Dynasty, the local Li people gave him Jibei cloth made of kapok. Su Dongpo thanked him with a poem: "Leave me Jibei cloth, the sea breeze makes the evening cold."
