Since the 1980s, some units in Beijing and other places have begun to experiment with growing new sprouts, but have failed to introduce new products to society and enter the market. In the mid-1980s, Beijing Aerospace Changqing Company introduced a fully enclosed plant factory from Japan and used soilless cultivation of radish sprouts and other sprouts as trial vegetables. However, it ultimately failed due to high energy consumption and high cost. In 1989, researchers from the Vegetable and Flower Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences began further research on sprouts. In 1993, "Green Food - Research on Bean Nutrition and Standardized Cultivation Technology" was officially listed as a key scientific research project of the Green Food Development Center of the Ministry of Agriculture. According to the requirements of product development while conducting research, in the autumn of 1994, it was successively launched in Zhengzhou, Henan Semi-enclosed, large-scale and intensive bean sprout production demonstration bases have been established in Changsha, Hunan, Shanghai, Beijing and other places. After several years of hard work, the project team studied the definition, types, characteristics and cultivation techniques of bean sprouts, and analyzed the seed morphology, seed water absorption capacity and water absorption speed of more than 30 types of bean sprouts, as well as the germination rate and germination potential of seeds under different temperatures. and the nutritional composition of various sprout products were observed, experimented and analyzed. The sprout varieties that have been developed and put on the market include asparagus pea sprouts, purple (seeded) toon sprouts, rutin tartary buckwheat, baby radish, green alfalfa, double-dimensional vine sprouts, fish tail adzuki bean sprouts, longevity fruit sprouts, etc. Bean sprouts and sprout bulbs such as chicory, wolfberry heads, peppercorn sprouts, malan heads, chrysanthemum brains and other body sprouts. A "series of live sprouts" products have been formed. As of March 1997, the "series of live sprouts" production technology has been rapidly adopted in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Harbin, Changchun, Shenyang, Xi'an, Lanzhou, Hohhot, etc. through technology transfer, technology cooperation and other means. It has been promoted in 111 cities including Jinan and Shijiazhuang, and the products have become popular in the market and are favored by consumers.
This scientific research achievement was awarded the Second Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress by the Ministry of Agriculture in 1997, and was listed by the China Association for Science and Technology as one of the 100 agricultural science and technology promotion projects during the "Ninth Five-Year Plan" period.
