Sodium lauryl ether sulfate, also known as sodium polyoxyethylene ether dodecanol sulfate, or AES for short, has continuous ethoxy -CH2 H2O- in its molecular structure. Sodium dodecyl sulfate is sodium dodecyl sulfate, commonly known as K 12 or LS.

The difference between AES and K 12 is that several ethoxy groups are inserted between the carbon chain and sulfate radical of K 12, which becomes AES. The properties of these two surfactants are similar, but AES has some properties of nonionic surfactants. From the application point of view, AES has better performance, and its irritation to skin is far less than K 12.
