The coffee tree is a small evergreen tree that can reach a height of 5-8 meters and usually has multiple branches at the base. The old branches are grayish white with enlarged nodes, while the young branches are hairless and flattened. The leaves are thinly leathery, ovate-lanceolate or lanceolate in shape, ranging from 6 to 14 cm in length and 3.5 to 5 cm in width. Both sides of the leaf are hairless, with or without small holes in the lower veins and fibula. The midrib is raised on both sides of the leaf, and there are 7-13 lateral veins on each side. The petiole is 8-15 mm long, and the stipule is broad and triangular. The top of the upper part of the young branches is cone-shaped or awn-shaped, and the top of the old branches is often a pointed tip, 3-6 mm long. The flowering period is generally from March to April every year. The flowers are white or light pink and have a strong fragrance. Each corolla is 10-12 mm long and consists of 5 curved and slender petals. When ripe, the berries are broad oval, red, 12-16 mm long and 10-12 mm in diameter. The exocarp is hard and the mesocarp is fleshy and sweet.
