Spanish marzipan background
The first "modern" marzipan was created 500 years ago in Spain's Hijona, actually inspired by the Arab region. Historians believe that the delicacy first appeared in the Arabian Peninsula, and then became popular in countries such as Spain, France and Italy. According to various accounts, in the 16th century, employers offered marzipan to people who worked for them at Christmas, which may have been the beginning of the association of marzipan with this important holiday and its transformation into a custom.
