Distributed in southwestern China and Vietnam in Asia, generally up to 17.4 centimeters in length, inhabiting the mid-bottom waters, and is an economically important fish in the Yuanjiang River Basin and the Li Xian River Basin.
On July 17, 2012, 11,000 Baird's New Light Lipfish (Softfin Tetraodontidae) and 0.6 million Dusky Lipfish fry bred by Yang Junxing's group at the Kunming Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, were released into the Lixianjiang River Basin from the reservoir area of the Jufudu Power Station of the Muojiang River in Yunnan Province.
