In the early 1960s, Huangchuan soft-shell turtle was designated as an export inspection-free product by the state. The foreign trade department of Huangchuan County began to build ponds for breeding. Together with wild soft-shell turtle, it can provide 51,000 kilograms of commercial soft-shell turtles every year. However, it is still Unable to meet export and domestic market demand, prices continued to rise. In the early 1980s, Huangchuan County began to think about how to make full use of this advantageous resource to promote Huangchuan's economic development.
In 1985, the Huangchuan County Agricultural Science and Technology Research Institute established a soft-shell turtle breeding research group. In that year, a soft-shell turtle breeding pond was built, wild soft-shell turtles were purchased for feeding, and the growth patterns and habits of the soft-shell turtles were observed. In 1986, the soft-shell turtle artificial hatching and rapid breeding project was recognized by the Henan Provincial Science and Technology Commission and included in the agricultural science and technology research projects of that year. In particular, the winter heated breeding was the first in China. In 1987, Huangchuan's soft-shell turtle breeding area expanded to 18 acres. After Huangchuan County researchers overcame 16 technical problems such as artificial breeding of soft-shell turtles, heated breeding, artificially prepared feed, polyculture of fish and turtles, and prevention and control of turtle diseases, Huangchuan County Sichuan soft-shell turtle breeding started from seasonal temporary breeding and foster care of wild soft-shell turtles, and gradually developed to artificial hatching and professional breeding. With the support and guidance of the county party committee and government and the strong pull of the market, the soft-shell turtle industry in Huangchuan County has developed vigorously and has become the largest soft-shell turtle breeding base in Henan Province. It is famous throughout the country. Huangchuan County is therefore known as the "Kingdom of Soft-shell Turtle".
In 1996, the Huangchuan County Party Committee and the county government increased their efforts to develop the soft-shell turtle breeding industry, and organized eight large-scale soft-shell turtle breeding companies in the county with the special experimental site as the center to jointly establish the "Huangchuan Soft-shell Turtle Breeding Industry". Sichuan County Juyuan Chinese Soft Turtle Group", Huangchuan soft-shell turtle industry has quickly formed a new pattern of large-scale development and intensive management, and Huangchuan soft-shell turtle breeding has entered a stage of rapid development. Statistics in 1997 show that Huangchuan County has 27 soft-shell turtle farms, 1,254 farmers, and more than 2,600 employees. The turtle breeding volume reached 450,000 kilograms, with an output value of 261 million yuan and a profit and tax of 41.81 million yuan.
The rapid development of Huangchuan turtle has attracted great attention from media at all levels. On May 26, 1991, the second program of CCTV grandly broadcast a special program on the artificial breeding of soft-shelled turtles in Huangchuan County in the "Economic Half Hour" "Wish You Get Rich" column. On May 14, 1994, Li Changchun, then Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee of Henan Province, went to Huangchuan to inspect the soft-shell turtle industry, and proposed that by catching turtles, ducks and flowers well, Huangchuan would prosper; Huangchuan would drive the old turtles to become well-off . On December 17, 1993, People's Daily reporter Li Erliang published a relatively large news report titled "The Kingdom of Turtles in Huangchuan". The turtle industry has become a distinctive business card of Huangchuan to the outside world.
Because Huangchuan soft-shelled turtle has a long history, excellent quality and distinctive characteristics, the cultivation of Huangchuan soft-shelled turtle has huge market potential and excellent development prospects. Through continuous exploration, the Huangchuan soft-shell turtle industry has implemented a new business model of "brand + association + base + farmers", achieving a rapid development of the soft-shell turtle industry. In March 2006, the Huangchuan County Ecological Turtle Breeding Association was established. The association effectively promotes scientific breeding and standardized production, improves the quality of commercial turtles, strengthens brand building, increases marketing efforts, and actively applies for pollution-free agricultural products and southern Henan Chinese ecological turtle origin certification. In order to ensure that farmers receive timely and effective pre-production, mid-production and post-production services, the association has established a purchasing and marketing company, a feed company and a Fumin Aquatic Products Company to actively provide soft-shell turtle farmers with market information, feed purchase and sales, greenhouse construction and breeding and hatching technical guidance. , actively researched, improved and introduced technologies for greenhouse construction, seedling breeding, and turtle disease prevention and control, which effectively promoted the scientific, standardized and efficient soft-shell turtle breeding industry.
Driven by the new model, the Huangchuan Turtle Breeding Association has grown in 21 towns including Huangsigang Town, Jiangjiaji Town, and Chuanliudian Township, with more than 800 farmers and greenhouses. The area is 48,000 square meters, and the outer pond breeding area is 6,800 acres, including 4 contiguous bases of 100 acres, 8 contiguous bases of 50 acres, 3 factory breeding sites, and 1 breeding base for recreational fishery development of soft-shelled turtles. There are 1 ecological turtle breeding association, 5 professional farmer cooperatives, and many enterprises such as breeding associations have been awarded the title of pollution-free base. The annual output is 1,000 tons (about 400 million animals) and the output value is about 350 million yuan, accounting for 60% of the county's aquaculture production. %, the products are exported to dozens of large and medium-sized cities such as Shanghai, Wuhan, Beijing, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, etc., promoting the economic development of Huangchuan and realizing farmers' poverty alleviation and prosperity.
