What is common in my hometown and countryside is a kind of white shell snail called the flower snail. Small in size, the shell is usually less than one centimeter in diameter, and there is a brown mark on the shell. Perhaps because of farmers, I don't like snails. I have eaten all the vegetables grown in the yard. But in lonely childhood, snails are also good playmates. They often collect snails they see and feed them to ducks and chickens when they are tired of playing.
I don't know when snails appeared outside the village. It has a brown shell, and it is much bigger. At that time, I asked many adults, but I couldn't name them, and I didn't have much impression. Because it is relatively rare, I specially selected a few farmed ones. In recent years, more and more snails have been found, which can be found in just a few steps. Perhaps because of the lack of natural enemies, it tends to spread and become a common pest on the land.
This snail has become a disaster in many places, especially in cornfields. The leaves of the corn were chewed up, and they climbed in along the corn whiskers to eat the corn. In serious places, there can be dozens of corn on a tree, but those who don't know it thought it was specially cultivated. Although pesticides have certain effects, they are not obvious. Many villagers can only catch insects manually and carry a bucket an hour.
After consulting some information, this kind of snail is called "grey snail" and distributed all over the country. I like to lurk in a cool and humid place, stay awake during the day, go out at night, and like to feed in the evening and early morning. If you encounter high temperature and dryness, you will close your mouth and lurk under wet soil cracks or leaves until the right conditions are met. Farmland is the ideal breeding condition for this snail. The land is wet, the sun is blocked, and the food is sufficient.
Snails reproduce faster, because they are hermaphroditic, and any two snails can reproduce. Each snail can lay eggs 6-7 times a year, and it can hatch about eight days after laying eggs. Moreover, snail reproduction is not limited by age, and the bigger the snail, the more eggs it lays. Nowadays, due to the decrease of some wild animals in rural areas, such as birds, lizards, toads, hedgehogs, fireflies and other animals, the number of snails is increasing.
Oncomelania control is mainly based on pesticides, and artificial capture will be used in serious places, and some chickens and ducks can be stocked in conditional farmland. Unfortunately, there is no habit of eating snails in China, otherwise it doesn't matter even if it is flooded, it will be eaten clean sooner or later.
