Mother's Day originated in the U.S. On May 9, 1906, Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia, U.S.A., was devastated by the tragic death of her mother. On the anniversary of her mother's death the following year, Miss Anna organized activities to memorialize her mother and encourage others to express their gratitude to their respective loving mothers in a similar way.

Since then, she has lobbied and appealed for a Mother's Day. On May 10, 1913, the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate passed a resolution, signed by President Woodrow Wilson, deciding that the second Sunday of May would be Mother's Day. This initiative was followed by other countries around the world, and by the time of Anna's death in 1948, Mother's Day had been established in 43 countries.

Mother's Day is a regional holiday in China, first celebrated in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. After the reform and opening up, Mother's Day was also accepted by the mainland. Guangdong Province in 1988, Hangzhou and other cities in 1989, the Women's Federation at all levels to organize the celebration of Mother's Day, and the selection of "good mother" as one of the contents of the festival.
