Meaning and Origin of Candy Cane Candy Cane A candy maker who lived in Indiana wanted to make a testament to God's He wanted to make a candy cane that would be a testimony for God. So he created the candy canes that we see today at Christmas time.
Folding Editorial Origin
At first he used whole white candies, made into hard sticks. White, representing Jesus, who was born of a virgin and was born without sin. The hard, solid candy represents the rock, Jesus as the cornerstone of the church and the promise that is held fast.
The shape of the candy cane resembles the letter J, which represents the precious name of Jesus Christ, who came into the world to save us. The shape of the cane also represents the staff of the Good Shepherd, who came into the world to find us, the lost sheep.
Then the candy maker felt that the all-white cane seemed too monotonous. So he added a couple of red lines to it. He used three smaller red lines to represent the scourging Jesus received. Because of His scourging, we are healed. The larger red lines are the blood that Jesus shed for us on the cross. As a result, we are able to enter into eternal life.
Sadly, crutch candy is reduced to a meaningless Christmas ornament. However, the meaning contained therein is for those who have 'eyes to see and ears to hear'. May this candy be used again to testify to the wonder and love of Jesus Christ. He was born into the world at Christmas time, and He is the Great King who still possesses omnipotence over the universe today.
Folding Edit Meaning
Christmas is the time when we celebrate the birth of Jesus, and candy canes are the most appropriate candy because they hold many meanings. First, turn it upside down on one side and it's the letter J, which is the first letter of Jesus' English name. Turn it back the other way and it resembles a shepherd's staff for herding sheep. It was a group of shepherds who first heard of the birth of Jesus, and Jesus was also a good shepherd who took care of his flock (we are all his beloved sheep) and looked for lost sheep.
In it, the hardened part of the candy reminds us that Jesus is the rock of our refuge and that he protects us in times of trouble. The rock also symbolizes that Jesus' promises to us are steadfast and we can trust his word (the Bible).
The sugary white part of the walking stick symbolizes Jesus' holiness and impeccability, and therefore, he offered his body as a sacrifice for our sins, and by believing that his blood was shed for us, God will forgive us all our trespasses and purify us from our sins.
The crutch candy has three thin and one thick red stripes. The three thin red stripes symbolize the scourges on Jesus' body, reminding us of how he was scourged when he was crucified; the thick red stripe is the blood he shed for us when the soldiers crucified him, indicating that he did die to save us from our sins.
The mint flavor of crutch candy is similar to an ancient spice called hyssop. In the days before Jesus, hyssop was used in rituals to pray for cleansing. After committing a serious sin, a person prayed to God "Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow". The blood of Jesus can cleanse us from all our sins if you are willing to believe.
Jesus was born to take away the sins of the world; He died for us and rose from the dead, so He can take away all our sins. If you confess your sins to Him, repent and confess your sins, and then accept Jesus' sacrifice for our sins, then you can believe that He will forgive us, make us clean from our sins, and give us a more abundant life through Jesus.
