What are the causes of retinal detachment

There are five main causes of retinal detachment:

1) Aphakic eyes

People with vitreous complications associated with cataract surgery are particularly susceptible to retinal detachment. As the vitreous cavity empties after cataract capsulotomy, it increases the space for the vitreous to oscillate, which increases its traction on the retina and increases the probability of retinal detachment.

②Age-related

Since the vitreous body of the elderly often undergoes degeneration and liquefaction, often accompanied by retinal degeneration. Therefore, retinal detachment is more likely to occur than in younger people.

③Medium and high myopia

We all know that high myopia is easily accompanied by many complications, and fundus disease is also a point of great concern for patients with high myopia. Since patients with moderate to high myopia are prone to vitreous degeneration or posterior detachment, and the retinal edge is fragile, it is more likely to cause retinal detachment under vitreous traction.

4Retinal degeneration

Some retinal degenerations, such as lattice-like degeneration, frost-like degeneration, and paving-stone-like degeneration, are particularly prone to form retinal tears, which can induce retinal detachment.

⑤Caused by trauma

Trauma may also lead to retinal detachment. At the moment of impact movement, the eyeball is subjected to strong tremor may lead to the temporary deformation of the eyeball, the vitreous base is separated from the wall of the sphere, resulting in retinal serrated edge detachment. And perforating trauma can directly damage the retina.

The current treatment for retinal detachment is still primarily surgical, with different treatments depending on the type and mechanism of detachment. Therefore, high-risk groups, including patients with moderate to high myopia, the elderly, and trauma patients, must pay attention to preventive examinations to guard against retinal detachment.
