Although in late January and early February 2018, Total Produce, the fruit and vegetable giant company from Ireland, announced that it had reached an agreement with Dole to buy 45% of Dole's shares for $300 million. This merger between two of the world's largest fresh produce companies is bound to create a huge stir within the global fruit and vegetable community, but there has been no name change.

Total Produce said the deal was motivated by an expectation of strong growth in demand for fresh fruits and vegetables driven by what it called 'structural trends toward healthier eating in diets and snacks'. The company said it raised $150 million to acquire the Dole shares through a share placement to existing and new investors. This is a very important step in the company's history and a continuation of its successful expansion strategy.
