Liu Chan was born in Jingzhou and experienced many disasters. Fortunately, General Zhao Yun saved him. After Liu Bei captured Yizhou and established Shu Han, he was named Prince. In the third year of Zhangwu (223), he succeeded to the throne as emperor, and the title was Jianxing, trusting his father Zhuge Liang.

In order to make Liu Chan well informed and master the art of governing the country, Liu Bei asked him to learn more books such as Shen Zi, Han Feizi, Guan Zi, Liu Tao, etc. Zhuge Liang personally copied these books for him to learn, and asked him to learn Zuo Zhuan with the Book of Changes as his teacher. Not only that, but also let him learn Wushu. There is a record in Cosmic Tale: "The shooting mountain is fifteen miles north of Chengdu County, and Liu Zhu Zen shoots here."

It's a pity that Liu Chan ignored state affairs in his later period, favoring eunuch Huang Hao, and his national strength was weak.

In the sixth year of Jing Yao (263), Wei sent Zhong Hui and Wargo from Si Mazhao to attack Shu and surrender to Wargo. After the death of Shu Han, Liu Chan was named the Duke of Happiness, and the minister Shu Han was moved to Luoyang to live.

In the seventh year of Taishi in the Western Jin Dynasty (27 1), Liu Chan died in Luoyang at the age of sixty-five. At the end of the Western Jin Dynasty, Zhao Liuyuan proclaimed himself emperor and made Liu Chan the filial piety emperor of the Han Dynasty.
